Watermelon Lemonade Smoothie

I want to let you all know that I’ve hated watermelon since the day I was born!  It has always tasted like dirty water to me.  My parents and I concluded that I hate this fruit so much because my mom ate a personal-sized watermelon almost everyday throughout her pregnancy with me, so  I was already tired of the crap by the time I was born!

With that being said, I am very surprised to say that I LOVE this Watermelon Lemonade Smoothie.  Not just like….but love!

 

Whole Lemon vs Lemon Juice in Smoothies

I use whole slices of lemon in this recipe, instead of using the juice of a lemon like usual.   The pith and skin of citrus fruits have many health benefits, so I always try to blend whole lemon slices to get all of the nutritious benefits.  I think the lemon slices really helped mellow out the watermelon flavor.  It has a perfect mild flavor with a hint of lemon and sweetness.  This is definitely a gateway watermelon recipe for those of you who have never liked it.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 sugar watermelon or about 4 cups
  • 3 1/4 inch slices of lemons
  • 8 medjool or california dates pitted
  • 1 cup water filtered if possible
  • 6 ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Blend everything together until smooth. Add water to adjust the sweetness and consistency, if desired.

Recipe Notes

Lemon peel and pith have many health benefits so I like to blend whole slices of lemons in my smoothies. If your blender is not strong enough to blend lemon with the peel attached to it then I would use the juice of 1 or 2 lemons (taste to see how many you want to use).
